black water at sebangau 300x225 Sebangau National ParkSet between the River Katingan and the River  Sebangau, Sebangau National Park is one of the peat swamp forest remaining in Kalimantan. This forest has an area of about 568.700 hectares and is home to more than 6000 orangutans. With that number makes this place is considered as one of the world’s largest population of wild orangutans.

Together with the Tanjung Puting National Park, Sebangau National Park is a perfect representation of pristine tropical forest in Central Kalimantan. Sebangau National Park is maintained through ongoing preservation of ancient indigenous Dayak.

Sebangau National Park has a rich biodiversity. The forest is also known for its special black water ecosystems. This ecosystem is an ecosystem that comes from decaying organic material in peat bogs that eventually result in the blackened water and a variety of unique living organisms inhabit.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Indonesia has conducted a campaign to establish a national park in 2004. WWF has also been engaging residents around the park to reduce the number of felling trees, making crafts cottage industry, reforestation, to ecotourism.

Besides being home to orangutans, Sebangau National Park is also a habitat for 25 species of mammals, 116 species of borneo birds , 36 species of fish, and about 166 species of flora.

Some fauna inhabitants Sebangau National Park include: orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), beruk (Macaca nemestrina), flatfoot (Presbytis rubicunda), proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus), honey bear (Helarctos malayanus), jungle cat (Felis bangalensis), squirrel (Exilisciurus axilis ), mountain hornbills  (A. undulatus), ivory hornbills  (Buceros vigil), rhinoceros hornbills (Buceros rhinoceros), heron swamp (Ciconiastormi), pecukular (Anhinga melanogaster), red cangak (Ardea purpurea), sea cangak (Ardea sumatrana), Black eagle (Ictinaetus malayensis), catfish (Clarias sp.), papuyu (Anabas testudineus), kakapar (Belontia hesselti), and sambaling (Betta sp.).

While the flora that you can find in this park include: jelutung (Dyera lowii), belangeran (Shorea belangeran), Pulai (Alstonia angustifolia), ironwood trees, orchids and black antlers orchid .

Obviously, do not forget to bring a camera and binoculars. There are plenty of other wildlife  along the way that await for your lens. Some of the animals that can be found in several locations along the river is the proboscis monkey, Scaly-breasted eagle, and the long-tailed monkeys.
